New Year’s Day 2016

It’s New Year’s Day, and it’s cool and it’s raining. All day and a lot—a lot all day, too. That’s not particularly unusual for this time of year—it’s actually cyclone season at the moment, after all. Still, after the hot, dry, sunny days we’ve had lately, it is quite a change.

The weather in Auckland the past week or two has been pretty awesome, but that comes at a price: Everything is quite dry. Having a nice, long soak, and cooler weather to keep it from evaporating, is a good thing for us to have. I really hate to admit that.

I knew my first blog post of this year was going to be about the day we’re having, but then I realised: Talking about it is one thing, showing is quite another. So, the first AmeriNZ YouTube video of 2016 is above. I said I wanted to do more videos, so why not start on the first day of the new year?

Like most of the others I’ve made so far, it’s quite short. That’s because it was spur of the moment, as, in fact, all my very short videos have been. When I have time to plan them a bit, they’ll be longer. And, eventually I’ll actually be in some of them, too. But, hey: Something is at least somewhat better than nothing.

We had a good day today, buying a new dishwasher at about 25% off, including delivery (our current one, which was probably installed when our house was built, is almost worn out). We also got Nigel’s mum a new cellphone—a modern smartphone that’ll be easier for her to use. It, too, was on special. So, a very successful shopping day.

Last night was similar to most years: Both Nigel and his mum went to bed well before midnight, but his sister, who was staying with us for the night, stayed up to midnight with me. We were appalled that there was nothing New Zealand on television on New Year’s Eve, and apparently no live countdown. Who knows? Maybe I’ll do something about that next year, because it’s unlikely that the broadcasters will do anything differently.

Despite the anti-climactic New Year’s arrival, and the cool rainy day today, New Year has been very good this year. So far, we’re off to a great start.

Happy New Year!
